01 May Fall Prevention
Falls are the top cause of serious injuries for seniors and can be costly, causing hospitalizations or life-altering injuries that can impair their independence. As your loved one ages, they may struggle with mobility issues, loss of strength, or loss of coordination, that can impede their daily activities. Most falls are caused by multiple risk factors; the more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance of falling is.
Health Factors
- Advanced age
- Previous falls
- Muscle weakness
- Gait & balance problems
- Poor vision
- Postural hypotension
- Chronic conditions
- Fear of falling
Environmental Factors
- Lack of stair handrails
- Poor stair design
- Lack of bathroom grab bars
- Dim lighting or glare
- Trip hazards
- Slippery or uneven surfaces
- Psychoactive medications
- Improper use of assistive device
Some of these risks are preventable by making changes in your home environment and by being aware of health changes.
1. Exercise to Improve Your Balance and Strength
Lack of exercise can lead to weakness. Exercises, such as Tai Chi or yoga, that improve balance can lower your chances of falling. Ask your primary care provider about the best type of exercise for you to improve your balance and strength.
2. Have Your Eyes and Feet Checked
Eye conditions like glaucoma or cataracts can limit your vision. Annual eye exams keep your prescriptions up to date and can help catch conditions that cause poor vision. It is also important for your primary care provider to check your feet annually, where proper footwear or any podiatry issues can be discussed.
3. Make Your Home Safer
- Remove trip hazards (papers, books, clothes, and shoes) from the ground.
- Prevent slip hazards; secure rugs with double-sided tape and install grab bars next to the toilet and tub/shower to provide stability.
- Prevent reach hazards by keeping items you often use (medications) within reach and without the use of a stepping stool.
- Improve the lighting in your home with brighter lights to see better and add night lights in hallways to prevent falls at night.
